DIY Gifts for Pilots: Candy Airplanes

IMG_3760My husband got his pilot’s license about 2 years ago and loves to fly when he’s not tied down to a home remodeling project. So, this Valentine’s Day after seeing a friend’s Facebook post, I decided to make him a little “sweet fleet” of planes complete with a sparkly runway, of course (my jewelry biz is called A Touch of Sparkle by Monica after all)!

There are many ways to make these with Smarties, Lifesavers and gum, however, I opted to use up some leftover candy canes (from my 1st pink and blue Christmas Tree), Valentine Sixlets, gum, Dum-Dum lollipops (from one of my many candy bouquet projects) and “lumps of coal” Christmas chocolates.

Airplane label

You’re open to design these little planes with whatever you have on hand as long as you can secure them together to look like a plane. Since I used glue for my planes, I would not suggest allowing these as edible gifts for kids, but just as show treats. For edible gifts to take to school or for kids to dismantle and eat, please opt for a no glue method such as The Frugal Female’s linked blog post above using Smarties.

To see how I assembled the blue candy cane plane, please watch my video tutorial. The Sixlet plane is verbally explained in the vlog as well.

In addition to making the planes, I made an airplane themed Valentine card using Microsoft Publisher (is usually cheaper and included in an Office Suite) and a small sparkly runway out of brown card stock paper, a metallic silver Sharpie, some rhinestone heart stickers bought at the Dollar Tree, heart themed pink washi tape and double stick tape. I also created a “couple” of pilot owls from felt stickers purchased at Michaels, folded brown card stock and pink washi tape scraps.

Card and Runway collage

Very easy and cute project for kids and adults. Pilots will fall in love with this Valentine idea as well. Use up some left over candy to make a sweet gift for the pilot of your heart! Be sure to tag me #SparkleByMonica on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram if you make these so I can see your crafty planes!

Gift Craft Tutorial: Soda Pop Candy Bouquet. Please Help Me Recover My Stats.

Collage stockings

Hello, sparkly shoppers! I had to revise one of my candy bouquet tutorials, so I took the opportunity to trim out about 6 1/2 minutes, remove some of the distracting stocking headers and change the music. All of these issues were the most common pet peeves in the comments from 2013 when this video was originally uploaded. (Back when my channel had just begun).

These candy bouquets are so easy to make for any occasion. It happened that this one was for a December birthday, so the candy I used had a Christmas theme in the colors and embellishments I chose. You can do these for people who are in the hospital, get well gifts, birthdays, holidays or just because.

You will need:

  • CANDY
  • Soda Pop (full can they can drink after eating candy)
  • Small Styrofoam cup
  • Hot glue gun
  • Ribbon (curly ribbon looks cutest)
  • Pointy toothpicks
  • Tape (clear)
  • Embellishments (such as name tag, stickers) as desired

Video: How to Make a Candy Bouquet with M&M’s and Snickers Sparkle by Monica

Had to update one of my crafty bouquet tutorials I did awhile back, so it lost the views. If you are interested in viewing this “sweet” video, I sure would appreciate the help getting it back up and running at YouTube. I love making these types of things. Now that I’ve moved away, I don’t have any new friends to make these nifty goodies for yet. Sniffles. Thanks bunches!

New Holiday Videos at YouTube from A Touch of Sparkle by Monica

Happy Sparkle-riffic Holidays, everyone!

I have recently created a new Christmas Video Catalog of my handmade jewelry which showcases many of my holiday themed designs. A customer favorite are my peppermint bracelets and rings. These are made of lampwork glass beads made to look like peppermints. That makes me hungry.

Over the last month, I made a few special holiday themed candy gifts. I have now edited them and uploaded to my YouTube channel, so please check them out.

One gift is a unique way to give someone their favorite candy and soda.

The other is a tree themed gift which is perfect for your party table or to give to a loved one.

Candy Bouquet Tutorial Video at A Touch of Sparkle by Monica YouTube Channel

Here is the newest crafty tutorial on my YouTube channel for the recent candy bouquet I made with Snickers and Peanut M&M’s. I have seen these in my local grocery stores with various types of candy and thought I’d try my hand at making one for my supervisor for her birthday. She loves these 2 particular candies, so I loaded this vase full of the peanut M&M’s in the bottom for added color and interest while poking both kinds into the top. More delicious than flowers, right?
